This week’s money saving tip is about recycling. Or rather, “FREEcycling.” You may or may not be aware that there are many “freecycle” groups on yahoo that you can join. The concept of these groups is to reduce waste to help our environment. In the process, you can help one another. I know many people donate their unwanted items to various thrift stores, which is wonderful. But, I know many who simply toss them in the trash. Instead, why not offer it to someone who might need or want it? Sometimes there are people who want even things we can’t imagine anyone needing. Maybe they use spare parts from TV’s, computers, bicycles, etc. in order to make repairs. Or maybe they can use clothing that is stained for work or for rags to make rugs or quilts. Some people even use plastic grocery bags to make re-useable items. You really have no idea what others may want or need until you ask. In addition, you can receive some items you may need. When my youngest child was a baby, I received some things that were “wants” but not “needs” that made life easier, such as a baby walker and a double stroller.

To find a group in your area, click here. Try searching by your city and county names as there may be multiple groups available. Please be sure to pay attention to the group rules. Some groups require that you offer something before asking for something, and the rules may vary per group.

In addition, there are some groups that list free community events. I found one for Palm BeachCountyhere and one that encompasses the state of Florida here.

There are also groups for online “garage sale” items. If you click here for yahoo groups, you can search using your city or county followed by “yard sale” or “garage sale” and you might find some good groups to buy or sell your items.

You might also be interested in some “swap” sites for books, cd’s, games, etc. Try Swap.com or Paperback Swap. I have not used these sites, but have read several good reviews on Paperback Swap.

Coupon Books now available: ENJOY THE CITY COUPON BOOKS are back! Check to see if there is a school or club in your area selling these.

One of the comments I hear from people regarding some of the frugal choices we have made is “Can you really save enough money to make it worth your time?” Well, I generally save about $500 a month on groceries by the way I shop. So, yes, I figure that is worth the hour or two I might spend on clipping & sorting coupons, going through sales, flyers, etc.

Another means of frugal living I’ve done occasionally is to make my own products. I’ve tried homemade laundry detergent and found it to be very effective and definitely cheaper most of the time. However, for me personally, I have decided that buying my laundry detergent on BOGO (buy one, get one free) sales with coupons makes the savings so small that it wasn’t worth the time for me to make my own. But that is because of my schedule. For some of you, it may be an excellent way to save a few bucks.

This week as I was reading The Simple Dollarblog, I came across an interesting article about making your own dishwasher detergent. I hadn’t come across a recipe for that yet! This is an excerpt from their “Saving Pennies or Dollars? Dishwasher Detergent” post:

”Cheryl said, Making my own powdered dishwasher detergent actually seems more expensive than just buying it at the dollar store.

This was a pretty intriguing comment to me as I’ve made my own liquid laundry soapat a price per load that is about 10% that of Tide. While dishwashing detergent is a bit of a different animal than laundry detergent, I’m interested in how the prices compare.

After scouring the internet for recipes (and trying a few), I found that the best recipe was a very simple one: one part borax, one part washing soda, one part water. This creates a liquid dishwashing soap that seems to clean our dishes pretty well.”

To continue reading about the cost effectiveness of this, you’ll find the rest of the story here.

**First, my apologies to
any of you who tried to join the “Live Chat” with me on Gather last week. The
host of the chat was very ill and unable to be online. I will let you know when
it gets rescheduled.**

I know I have talked
about this information before, but I do believe it’s often helpful to go back
and review the “basics.” So, for this week I’ve
compiled a “beginner’s guide to couponing.”

In today’s economy,
saving money wherever possible has become an essential for many people. Grocery
prices continue to rise and yet incomes are not. However, good prices are
available if you take a few minutes each week to plan your shopping. In fact, I
routinely save 40-50% on groceries each month by
using the simple methods outlined below.

In my experience, there
are two main things you can do to really stretch your grocery budget.

1) Stock up on
non-perishable items when they are on sale so you never have to pay full price
for them. Sales are usually on an 8-12 week cycle, so purchase enough to get
you through 12 weeks if possible so you are not paying full price in between
sales

2) Save coupons and look
for printable coupons to add to the sale prices to provide you an even bigger
discount.

There are many more tips
that help but focusing on those two is a great start.

Before we start, here is
a list of acronyms commonly used:

BOGO – Buy one, get one
free

SS – Smart Source
(coupon inserts in Sunday’s papers)

RP – Red Plum (coupon
inserts in Sunday’s papers)

Many people ask me where
I find coupons. There are many sources that I will list below:

-The Sunday Newspaper.
Almost every week, aside from a holiday weekend, there will be coupon inserts
in the paper.

-Many manufacturers will
have printable coupons on their websites. If they don’t, email them and ask
them for coupons. Many times they will send you a nice batch of coupons in the
mail!

-Look for “blinkies” in
stores – these are the coupons that are in a dispenser on the store shelves
next to the products

-Look in magazines.
Walmart’s All You Magazine is a great one for coupons – http://www.allyou.com/

-Many mid-week papers
have coupon inserts as well. Locally the “Forum” and “Jewish Journal” both have
coupons that come out on Wednesday.

-Publix has several
magazines that usually have coupons in them. I suggest subscribing to them
(they are free) as the store copies don’t always have the coupons.

Publix Greenwise – http://publix.com/wellness/greenwise/feature/Home.do

Publix FamilyStyle – http://publix.com/clubs/familystyle/Home.do

Publix Wine Guide – http://publix.com/clubs/wine/Home.do
(They often have coupons for cheese or other items are commonly paired with
wine).

In addition, if you
qualify, sign up for the following:

Publix Baby Club – http://publix.com/clubs/baby/Home.do

Publix Preschool Pals – http://publix.com/preschool/NonMemberHome.do

Many stores will have
extra coupon booklets that come out through the year. Always check their sales
flyer areas to see if they have any available.

Product Demonstrations:
If you see someone demonstrating/sampling a product you use, ask if you can
take a few coupons, when coupons are offered. Since I am a product
demonstrator, I know that we are usually given far more coupons than we need.

All You Magazine August
Coupon List – Bargain Briana has been kind enough to
provide a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine for
August. You can check it out here
to see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy. I believe it retails for
$2.49 per issue if you buy it at Walmart, but you can get a subscription for
$1.66 per issue here.
However, I will tell you that sometimes the subscription version has less
coupons than the newsstand version.

Walmart Deals – Iheartthemart.com
has put up the best deals from Walmart this week. You can find those here.
Also, Walmart has started offering double coupons as a “pilot program” in
certain areas. IHeartTheMart has more information on that here.
There is also a link on there to sign a petition asking Walmart to continue
this program company-wide.

When is the last time you did some price comparisons on various services used in your household? I know most of the time it is just easier to stick with what you have rather than spend the time getting quotes from new companies. However, we are in the process of getting quotes on our auto insurance. I have held off for quite a while now because, quite honestly, it’s an annoying project to me! I really hate dealing with insurance. However, I’ve already had one quote that would save us approximately $70 per month and would double most of the coverage that we have! That’s a huge savings. And it is with a well-known, reputable company.

It seems kind of sad – you’d think that being a long-term, loyal customer would give you some benefits. But the truth is that many companies really don’t care. You get the standard price increase every year regardless of your track record with them. So, sometimes in order to get competitive pricing, you have to change the company with which you do business. There are other service providers that can easily be checked out as well. Telephone services (both landline and cell phones), cable, and internet services are just a few that come to mind. I’m sure you can think of others as well.

LIVE CHAT FRIDAY, 8/12

Gather is a social networking site that pays members for their activity. It does take a while to reach a payout level, but if you are a social networking fan, you might enjoy it! One of the members is hosting live chats with a different author each week. On Friday, 8/12/2011, at 9pm EST, I will be the guest author. You do have to be a member of Gather to participate in the chat. However, it is free to join and your identity can be completely anonymous if you choose. If you don’t wish to join, you can still view the conversation. You just have to keep “refreshing” your screen for the new comments to show up. I won’t have the exact link to the chat until shortly before it begins, but you can go to my home page to watch for a post that will include the link. You’ll find my home page here. You may want to go to Gather ahead of time to set up your account if you wish to participate.

DON’T FORGET TAX-FREE WEEKEND!

Florida’s tax-free weekend is scheduled for August 12-14 this year. Unfortunately, the tax-free benefit is not good on everything, so I encourage you to check the list of qualifying items before shopping. According to information found on About.com, Florida’s Tax Free Weekend Applies to:

Books, clothing, and footwear ($75 or less)

School supplies ($15 or less)

ATTENTION COUPON USERS: I thought I would pass along this articleabout an “extreme” couponer who was recently arrested for stealing coupons from newspapers. Apparently she was purchasing one paper, but taking the coupon inserts out of the others in the newsstand. I found it interesting considering that for the last few weeks someone in my area has been ransacking all the coupon inserts out of the free mid-week papers. I stopped by three newsstands just trying to get one paper with coupons! So, please be respectful of others and not hoard all the coupons!

All You Magazine August Coupon List – Bargain Briana has been kind enough to provide a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine for August. You can check it out here to see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy.

It’s that time of year again! Back to school sales are already starting! I know for many of you, your schools provide a specific list of what items are needed for each class. And I know those lists are not yet available. However, there are many basic items that you can begin stocking up on now. I picked up notebook paper for $0.25 each, 10-pack pencils for $0.19, composition notebooks for $0.40. There are some really great deals going on right now. Couponing to Disney has provided a great comparison list for easy reference. You can find it here. Keep in mind that some of these deals do end on Saturday, 7/23 so check your sales flyers in Sunday’s paper for the next week’s deals. Office Depot told me their back to school sales continue through sometime in September.

This is also a great time to stock up on supplies or clothing you might need over the next few months. After all, Christmas/Hannukah is not that far away now! If you do not have children going back to school, it is still a good time to stock up on supplies for your home or office.

You will still want to compare prices at the stores where you shop. Many stores will have a limit on how many of a sale item you can purchase, so it may be necessary to go to multiple locations or make multiple trips to get what you need. Fortunately for us, inS. Florida, we usually have multiple locations of each store within a reasonable distance.

Before you begin to shop, use your Sales Flyers from Sunday’s paper, or from the store’s website, to compare prices to make sure you get the best deals.

If your children require uniforms for school, you may want to check prices in stores as well as on their website. Many stores offer site-to-store shipping for free where you can order online and pick up at the store, and the prices may vary. And, of course, don’t rule out second-hand stores for clothing needs.

Here is another great article I found this week from All You Magazine. It’s a list of 30 money-saving tips. You can find it here.

All You Magazine July Coupon List - Frugally Thrifty has been kind enough to provide a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine for July. You can check it out here to see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy. I believe it retails for $2.49 per issue if you buy it at Walmart, but you can get a subscription for less. However, I will tell you that sometimes the subscription version has less coupons than the newsstand version.

Walmart Deals – Iheartthemart.com has not yet put up the best deals from Walmart this week. Keep checking their site for updates.

Do you get tired of paying high prices for Over-The-Counter medicines/treatments for various minor health issues? You may be surprised to find that a few regular household products can be very beneficial to have around!

Apple Cider Vinegar in particular seems to have many health benefits, both if taken internally or used as a topical treatment. And it’s very affordable! Earth Clinic Folk Remedies has a very helpful article you can find here.

But that’s just one product that can help. There are many other remedies using products such as milk, honey, olive oil, baking soda, just to name a few. MSN Health has some helpful information for sunburn/razor burn, flaky skin, minor wounds, athlete’s foot, insect bites and much more that you can find here.

Another homeopathic treatment that we find very helpful is for swimmer’s ear. My kids are in the pool a lot in the summer and tend to suffer from this frequently. So, as prevention, we have used is a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol after the kids have been in the water. You can find more about this and other home remedies here.

I think you will find that many home remedies can be very valuable and effective, and can save you a good deal of money by not having to pay for expensive creams, lotions, and other treatments. It’s certainly worth checking into.

**Disclaimer** I am not a medical professional. Please do your own research on homeopathic remedies and their safety and effectiveness before use. When necessary, consult with your physician.

Publix New Coupon Policy

Effective May 23, 2011, Publix has announced that it will no longer accept competitor coupons from drug stores such as Walgreens and CVS for items other than prescriptions. I have also been told that they do not consider Target and Walmart competitors and do not accept those coupons. However, each region may vary because some stores have accepted Target coupons from me, and some have not. So, I recommend checking specifically with your store.

In addition, Publix reserves the right to limit quantities of items purchased with coupons.

You can read Publix statement regarding their policy here.

I think we are going to see these types of changes as a growing trend due to the fact that more people are using coupons in this economy. And, unfortunately, I believe the TV show “Extreme Couponing” has encouraged hoarding instead of sensible couponing. Publix has always technically had a limit on their BOGO sales, but I’ve never had a store enforce it on me. However, if people start emptying their shelves of sale product, I’m sure Publix will start doing enforcing that policy.

Now for some other good stuff!

All You Magazine June Coupon List - Frugally Thrifty has been kind enough to provide a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine for July. You can check it out here to see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy.

Walmart

Many of you may have seen the recent Walmart TV ad on their price matching policy. If not, the policy is that they will match any competitor’s pricing. I called my local Walmart store this morning to try to get clarification on this policy. I’m not satisfied with the response, but that was expected based on my experience with Walmart here inSouth Florida. The person who answered the phone didn’t have any idea which stores they matched and transferred me to the service desk. That employee didn’t now either and just told me to bring in the ad that I wanted matched. I explained that I wanted to know which stores they would match BEFORE I entered the store and she told me she couldn’t find a list. So, I’m not very convinced that the cashier’s are going to have any knowledge either! I then called their corporate office to speak to a customer service representative who had to ask her supervisor. So, here’s what I was told:

1) You must have the ad you want matched with you

2) The competitor stores they will match are determined by the local store manager and market manager.

3) They should accept anything within the general area, including traditional grocery stores, drug stores, home improvement stores, electronic stores, etc.

4) I didn’t ask about this today, but in the past I was told that they do not match BOGO (buy one, get one free) sales.

In addition, if you have manufacturer coupons to use, these should be accepted even after price matching. Apparently people in some areas have had problems with stores accepting coupons in addition to price matching. However, according to corporate policy, they should accept the coupons.

Sounds good, right? I hope it is. However, I don’t know how much you can save to make it worth the hassle. Only you can determine what lengths you are willing to go to in order to save. Personally, grocery shopping at Walmart is not for me. And I can get better pricing by using Publix BOGO sales.

I believe it retails for $2.49 per issue if you buy it at Walmart, but you can get a subscription for less. However, I will tell you that sometimes the subscription version has less coupons than the newsstand version.

Most of us inSouth Florida are well aware of the serious drought conditions in our area. Lower than normal rainfall has been an issue for several years now. So, it is very important to do what we can to conserve water. This is always a challenging issue for me. However, I also know that by changing a few things, not only am I helping with the overall water shortage, but I’m also helping to save my family some money on the water bill.

Here are just a few examples:

Don’t run the water the entire time you’re washing dishes. This is hard for me. I have one large sink instead of a divided sink, so I have to wash & rinse in the same sink. So, I’ve formed the bad habit of having the water running the entire time and not filling up the sink with water. It would be far better to put a small amount of water in the sink to wash and then turn the water on low (rather than on full blast) when I’m ready to rinse.

Pay attention to how much bath water your children are using. For those of you with young children, give them a limit of how high they can let the water get in the tub. I know mine have been known to overflow the tub in the past!

Consider low-flow appliances, shower heads, faucets, aerators, toilets etc. According to EarthEasy, it could save you up to 50% on your water bill as well. The website, WaterUseItWisely.com has a good article on this as well. You can find it here.

Repair/replace leaky faucets/fixtures. I know for us it seems like something is always leaking. Apparently fixtures just don’t last as long as they used to!

Water plants with “leftover” drinking water. It seems like our household always has water glasses/bottles left with just a bit of water in them. Instead of dumping it down the drain, use this to water your plants. If you don’t have plants inside, just step outside the door and water any outdoor potted plants, or even just pour it on the lawn.

I think you’ll find that using some of these techniques may lower your water bill also. But, if you live in an apartment or other residence where you don’t pay for water, it will still help keep your landlord’s costs down. And hopefully it will result in keeping your rent from being increased.

Now for some other good stuff!

All You Magazine June Coupon List - InGoodCentshas been kind enough to provide us a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine that is on the newsstands now. You can check it out hereto see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy.
Kids Eat Free

There are quite a few restaurants that have special “Kids Eat Free” days/times. Usually it’s one child free with the purchase of an adult entrée. You can check out Coupon Divas list here to see what is currently available in your area. This list is quite extensive so I have not verified each listing.

These are just a handful of ideas to get you started on exploring some summer fun. Of course, we always have the beach nearby as well! If you would like to find some new and exciting things to do, pretend you are a first-time visitor in your town. Check out the local visitor’s guides and tourist information. Go to the Chamber of Commerce website and you should find a great deal of information.

All You Magazine June Coupon List - InGoodCents has been kind enough to provide us a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine that is on the newsstands now. You can check it out here to see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy. I believe it retails for $2.49 per issue if you buy it at Walmart, but you can get a subscription for less. However, I will tell you that sometimes the subscription version has less coupons than the newsstand version.

Walmart Deals – Iheartthemart.com usually puts up the best Walmart deals on Wednesday. It wasn’t up when I looked but you may want to check it out if you are headed to Walmart.

It seems like holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day end up being ones that we don’t plan for, or that cost us more than we think. I honestly believe that the best Father’s day gifts are the gifts from the heart. We rarely purchase gifts for these occasions. Instead we will have the kids make a card and/or a craft item. Sometimes it is something that will last – like painting some sort of wooden box to store things in, or items out of clay, etc. But I think what is most important is that it is something that touches the heart.

I realize not everyone has time to make a nice gift, but I think you’d be surprised what you can come up with. What about making “gift certificates” to do something at a later date with your dad. Maybe you could clean the car, the garage, or mow the yard, etc. Or perhaps you could make him a nice lunch or dinner or a favorite dessert. There are a lot of great ideas out there that won’t create financial stress.

Also, check out your local dollar store for a card. I buy almost all of my cards throughout the year at a dollar store, unless it’s a card we make. Often they are even less than a dollar. I never buy cards for children’s birthday parties. I have my kids make the cards for their friend’s birthdays. They love putting their own personal touches on the card.

Here are some great articles I found on frugal Father’s Day Gifts:

MommySavers.com – Frugal Father’s Day Gift Ideas from our Readers

About.com – Home-Made Gift Ideas for Men

About.com – Top 8 Frugal Father’s Day Gift Ideas

The Simple Dollar – Eight Frugal Father’s Day Gift Ideas

I’m sure there are plenty more you can find if you need more ideas. But I hope that gives you some ideas on how to avoid the financial pitfalls that often come with Father’s Day! Don’t get me wrong…there’s nothing wrong with giving Dad a gift. But, if finances are tight, I’m sure Dad understands if you can’t manage it.

Now for some other good stuff!

All You Magazine June Coupon List - InGoodCents has been kind enough to provide us a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine that is on the newsstands now. You can check it out here to see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy.
