Rolling the Register Coupons – weekly deals 1/6-1/12

Did any of you get a chance to watch Extreme Couponing on TLC last week? If you missed it, the show is set to air again on January 4 & 5. You can check out the schedule here.  I have to admit that it motivated me to get back on track with finding the deals again. I do really well at getting great deals at Publix, but because of my schedule, I haven’t made time to check into the other great deals lately, especially at CVS & Walgreens.

One thing I did want to mention was the shelf life of products. Extreme Couponing showed people who had literally hundreds of bottles of items such as salad dressings, deodorants, laundry detergent (liquid), etc.  Please know that these items DO have a shelf life.  So, be careful when stocking up to make sure that the product won’t be expired before you will get to use it. If you can get it free and can’t use it, donate it! Soup kitchens and organizations like that cannot accept expired foods due to liability issues.

So, in my efforts to not miss any more CVS and/or Walgreen’s deals, I thought I’d give you an example of how to make those “register coupons” work for you. CVS calls theirs “Extra Care Bucks” so I’ll refer to them as ECB’s.  My first suggestion is to plan to shop when you think the store will not be busy. I always have them ring up several transactions so I don’t want to hold up the line.

Transaction #1

Tone Body Wash – on sale for $3.88. Out of pocket: $4.12, received a $3 ECB back

Transaction #2

2 Pantene Conditioners – on sale 2 for $7. Used a $3 Manufacturer Coupon and the $3 ECB from Transaction #1. Out of pocket:  $1.39, received a $2 ECB back.

Transaction #3

2 Always pads – on sale for $3 each. Used 2 manufacturer coupons for $1 each and the $2 ECB from Transaction #2. Out of pocket: $2.36 and received a $2 ECB back.

Transaction #4

2 Herbal Essence conditioners – on sale for $2.99. Used a Manufacturer coupon for buy one, get one free and the $2 ECB from Transaction #3. Out of pocket: $1.35

Grand total out of pocket: $9.22

Retail value:                      $35.21

I realize this retail value is slightly exaggerated because I would not normally pay that much even without the coupons. I’m sure most of us would choose to shop at a different type of store where regular prices are less. But, combine sales, coupons and Extra Care Bucks, and it’s definitely worth the effort!

I work the Walgreen’s deals the same way, but they call their register coupons “Register Rewards” and their computers are a bit more challenging. They only allow 1 coupon per item, so if you have a manufacturer coupon and a register reward coupon, but only one item, they won’t take it. So, you have to pick up another small priced item for the coupons to scan properly.
