Examiner: Save Money AND Conserve Water – weekly deals 6/23-6/29/2011‏

Most of us inSouth Florida are well aware of the serious drought conditions in our area. Lower than normal rainfall has been an issue for several years now. So, it is very important to do what we can to conserve water. This is always a challenging issue for me. However, I also know that by changing a few things, not only am I helping with the overall water shortage, but I’m also helping to save my family some money on the water bill.

Here are just a few examples:

Don’t run the water the entire time you’re washing dishes. This is hard for me. I have one large sink instead of a divided sink, so I have to wash & rinse in the same sink. So, I’ve formed the bad habit of having the water running the entire time and not filling up the sink with water. It would be far better to put a small amount of water in the sink to wash and then turn the water on low (rather than on full blast) when I’m ready to rinse.

  1. Pay attention to how much bath water your children are using. For those of you with young children, give them a limit of how high they can let the water get in the tub. I know mine have been known to overflow the tub in the past!
  2. Consider low-flow appliances, shower heads, faucets, aerators, toilets etc.  According to EarthEasy, it could save you up to 50% on your water bill as well.  The website, WaterUseItWisely.com has a good article on this as well. You can find it here.
  3. Repair/replace leaky faucets/fixtures.  I know for us it seems like something is always leaking. Apparently fixtures just don’t last as long as they used to!
  4. Water plants with “leftover” drinking water.  It seems like our household always has water glasses/bottles left with just a bit of water in them. Instead of dumping it down the drain, use this to water your plants. If you don’t have plants inside, just step outside the door and water any outdoor potted plants, or even just pour it on the lawn.

I think you’ll find that using some of these techniques may lower your water bill also. But, if you live in an apartment or other residence where you don’t pay for water, it will still help keep your landlord’s costs down.  And hopefully it will result in keeping your rent from being increased.

Now for some other good stuff!

All You Magazine June Coupon List – InGoodCentshas been kind enough to provide us a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine that is on the newsstands now.  You can check it out hereto see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy. I believe it retails for $2.49 per issue if you buy it at Walmart, but you can get a subscription for less.  However, I will tell you that sometimes the subscription version has less coupons than the newsstand version.

Walmart Deals – Iheartthemart.com usually puts up the best Walmart deals on Wednesday. It wasn’t up when I looked but you may want to check it out if you are headed to Walmart.
