Frugal Literature & Learning / Weekly deals 5/12-5/18

As a homeschooling parent, I’m always interested in free or frugal educational materials and/or websites. And, for children, there are far more websites available than I could even begin to list.  However, I was highly motivated this last school year to put a bigger emphasis on literature for education as well as enjoyment. As a result, it’s also increased my interest in literature for adults as well as kids.

I’ll be honest. I love to read. To sit down with a good book and get absorbed in it is a great joy to me. I know many of you love your e-books and audio books, but I love an old fashioned book to hold onto and turn pages. So, the library is my greatest source. Being a fast reader, on a frugal budget, with little space for additional bookshelves, the library is fantastic. My husband, on the other hand, much prefers his audio books that he can listen to in the car. So, he has been finding some great resources for free audio books he can download to his iPod.

1)      Check your local library. I know the Palm Beach County Library has free audio books to download, as well as a huge selection in the library to check out. And, if you were not aware, you can reserve materials from any branch to be brought to your local branch to check out.  We also found out that the Delray Beach City Library does not offer downloadable ones, but does have a good selection to check out. So, be sure to check both city and county libraries in your area.

2)      Bibliomania – This site offers over 2,000 free online texts – books, poetry, study guides, research materials and more – all free to read online.

3)      Education-Portal.com – this site offers a list of 7 universities that offer access to free literature classes online.

I’m a firm believer in the value of reading quality literature. It helps with our spelling, language and vocabulary skills, as well as gives us access to learn about any topic of interest.  I’ve noticed that by reading aloud to my young children this year, they in turn have read far more on their own than they ever would have done otherwise. They are enjoying reading about subjects they would never have been interested in before.

So, go enjoy an afternoon at the park or the beach, or even just hanging around the house with a good book!

Frugal Gifts For Mom / weekly deals 4/25-5/4/2011

It seems like holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s day end up being ones that we don’t plan for, or that cost us more than we think. But, as a mom, I can honestly say that the best Mother’s day gifts are the gifts from the heart. My kids are still young, but my husband doesn’t have them buy me a Mother’s day gift, or take me out for lunch. Instead, they make cards for me, and usually do some type of craft. Some years my husband has purchased inexpensive craft supplies and they’ll make something that will last (such as a clay heart that says “mom” on it, or a little box they painted and glued their picture on).

I realize not everyone has time to make a nice gift, but I think you’d be surprised what you can come up with. What about making “gift certificates” to do something at a later date with your mom. Maybe you could clean her house, mow her yard, plant her some flowers, etc. Or perhaps you could make her a nice lunch or dinner and just let her relax. I know a great gift for me would be for my family to clean the house! You shouldn’t allow Mother’s Day (or Father’s Day) to create financial stress.

Also, check out your local dollar store for a card. I buy almost all of my cards throughout the year at a dollar store, unless it’s a card we make.  Often they are even less than a dollar.  I never buy cards for children’s birthday parties. I have my kids make the cards for their friend’s birthdays. They love putting their own personal touches on the card.

If you have a little more time and enjoy being a little more creative, why not try some of the gifts in a jar?  I found some recipes you may want to check out.

Homemade Bath Salts

Dry Rubs

Various Goodies

Homemade Candles and Soaps

I hope that gives you some ideas on how to avoid the financial pitfalls that often come with Mother’s Day! Don’t get me wrong…there’s nothing wrong with giving Mom gifts. But, if finances are tight, I’m sure Mom understands if you can’t manage it.

Stocking up for Hurricane Season

With hurricane season approaching, this is a good time to review the principles of stockpiling.  Some of you may have seen TLC’s new show “Extreme Couponing”  and may have a misconception of this concept.  I am not promoting “hoarding” a year’s worth of supplies. However, there is much to be said for a reasonable stockpile of products.  Hurricane season is a prime example. For those of us who have lived in S. Florida, or other hurricane zones, for a few years, I’m sure you understand!

Now is the time to start stocking up on certain non-perishable items. Canned items such as tuna, vegetables, etc. become essential when you end up without electricity for several days. Hurricane Wilma still remains vivid in my mind. While many people were scrambling to find food they could eat, we were well prepared with our camping equipment, some propane, and a reasonable supply of non-refrigerated items.  It is also a good time to minimize the items in your freezer. Go through it and make a list of what is in there, and try to utilize what is there before buying more. While avoiding buying freezer items, it allows you more of your grocery budget to stock up on the non-perishable items without over-extending your grocery budget.  If hurricane season passes and those non-perishable items were not needed, you can then use your extra grocery money to restock the freezer without having to purchase canned goods later.

In today’s economy, saving money wherever possible has become an essential for many people.  Grocery prices continue to rise and yet incomes are not.  However, good prices are available if you take a few minutes each week to plan your shopping.

In my experience, there are two main things you can do to really stretch your grocery budget.

Stock up on nonperishable items when they are on sale so you never have to pay full price for them.  Sales are usually on an 8-12 week cycle, so purchase enough to get you through 12 weeks if possible so you are not paying full price in between sales

  1. Save coupons and look for printable coupons to add to the sale prices to provide you an even bigger discount.

There are many more tips that help but focusing on those two is a great start.

Free or Frugal Fun – weekly deals 4/14-4/23/2011

This weekend is the annual Delray Affair, in Delray Beach, Florida. If you’ve never been, you should go check it out.  It is a large arts & crafts fair with strolling entertainers and top-notch exhibitors displaying their wares. And, of course, plenty of fair food! And usually there is live music in Veteran’s Park. It’s an outdoor event, so there is no admission fee.  To read more about it, please click here.  The event is located in Downtown Delray Beach, so if you’re taking I-95, just head East on Atlantic Avenue and you’ll run into it!

If you’re not one for crowds, don’t forget there are plenty of free nature parks in the area. We recently visited Wakodahatchee Wetlands and saw a large number of baby birds. Green Cay Nature Center is another great option that even has an indoor exhibit area as well as the boardwalk around the wetlands. And there are quite a few museums that have very inexpensive admission fees. Some are free, but ask for a donation. Another recent visit for us was the Johnson History Museum  in West Palm Beach to see their “Feather Wars: Surviving Fashion 1870-1920”  display about how feathers in fashion almost destroyed Florida birds.  I’m sure you can find plenty to do in the area.

If you don’t live near these events, it only takes a few minutes to research parks, nature centers, museums, and more in your area. It’s spring time, so get out and enjoy it! :

 Aldi’s Supermarket

Did you know there are now some Aldi’s Supermarkets in the South Florida area? I have yet to shop there, because unfortunately it’s not conveniently located for me. But, looking at some of their prices online, I may have to make an occasional visit!  You might want to check it out.

Making the Most of Your Tax Refund – weekly deals 4/7-4/13/2011

Are you getting a tax refund? If so, have you thought about what you’re going to do with that money? I know many people have already gotten their refunds, but I hope you have used it wisely.  If you haven’t yet gotten yours back yet, then I urge you to consider establishing or funding an “emergency fund.”  I know it’s tempting to buy something you have been wanting and couldn’t afford. And it’s even wiser to consider paying off some debt.  However, there is a lot to be said for having the emergency fund over paying off debt.  I do realize that on a strictly financial level, the interest rate you will earn is far less than the interest rate you are paying on debt, even if you are lucky enough to have a low rate on your debt.  But, at the same time, consider the stress relief you would feel if you knew you had $1,000.00 in the bank for emergencies. You wouldn’t be worried about what to do when that unexpected car repair was necessary, or whatever other unplanned expense arises. Stress is a huge cause of many physical health issues, so I strongly urge you to consider this idea.

Most financial experts suggest having a minimum of $1,000.00 as an emergency fund.   Then, if your refund is more than that, work on paying off the smallest debt first. Once that debt is paid off, you can add that minimum monthly payment amount onto what you’re paying on another debt to reduce that debt faster. Continue doing that until your debt is paid!  I hope to one day be completely debt-free, but I’ll be happy when we reach a level of having only a mortgage as debt!  I hope you’re working to that goal as well.

Now for some other good stuff!

I’ve always been amazed when I’ve heard people say they can save more money buy shopping at discount stores, or by purchasing store-brand products, than they can save by using coupons. While I fully agree that store brand products are less costly than name brand products at regular price, you can often get far better deals by combining store sales with coupons.  For example, it will be a rare occurrence when a discount store’s price will be less than a buy one, get one free (BOGO) price. Then if you can add coupons on top of the sale, you’ve gotten a great deal. If your store’s don’t offer the BOGO sales, you’ll definitely want to do some price comparisons between store brand and name brand products.

However, you also have to learn to avoid The Coupon Trap!  What I call The Coupon Trap is when you are motivated to purchase a product that you wouldn’t normally purchase because you have a coupon, or because it’s on sale.  Here’s a humorous example for you.  Years ago, a college co-worker went shopping with his roommates. He came to work telling us about all the great deals he got. One of the items was cat food. However, he didn’t have a cat! So, I asked him why he would purchase cat food if he didn’t even own a cat. His answer….you guessed it…”because it was on sale and there was a coupon right on the package.”  Now, I know this seems extreme (but it is a true story!) and I’m sure that the majority of us would not do something quite so outrageous unless we planned to donate the cat food to a worthy cause. However, we get tempted constantly for frivolous purchases.  So, while it may be a good deal price-wise, you have to ask yourself, “Do I NEED this item? Would I purchase this item under normal circumstances?”  If the answer is no, then you need to weigh your other considerations. I know I often buy items for the kids for which I would never pay full price. But, if I can get them for a low price on occasion, it’s a nice treat for them.  However, I know people often get duped into purchasing way too many unnecessary items.  So always give yourself a few minutes to really think it over before making that final decision.

Also, if possible, shop without your children! They are a constant source of temptation – always asking “can we get ____.”  I often have no choice but to go shopping with the kids. However, I have continually taught my children that if the item is not on sale with a coupon, it won’t make it into the cart! So, now my kids say “Mommy, next time it’s on sale and you have a coupon, can we get it?”   I’m so glad they’ve learned this lesson early on in life!

Home Gardening for Savings

I keep seeing all these articles about growing your own food. I will be the first to admit that we did try planting a garden once and we didn’t as well as we hoped. However, we live in a townhouse with a cement patio. We created a container on the patio, filled it with soil and attempted a container garden. We quickly learned that our patio is facing the wrong direction and we don’t get enough sun for most of the items we tried to grow! So, before you go investing any money in gardening supplies, make sure your space has adequate sun exposure!

There are several types of gardens to consider. If you have enough yard space, you can till some of the ground and create a traditional garden. If not, consider the various types of container gardens available and decide what might be viable for you. There are all types of containers. I’ve seen various planters that hang and stack. There is hydroponic gardening, which doesn’t require soil. Many people prefer to use small containers that can be brought inside in the event of unexpected poor weather conditions.

Before starting you also want to consider what types of items you will be most likely to use that are a good option for the climate where you live. And, remember that optimal planting times may be different based on where you live. For example, we can grow some crops in Florida during the winter that most places grow during summer months. Be sure to do your research before starting!

Obviously, during the first season of gardening, you may end up spending a little extra in supplies to get started. However, once you get your garden growing, you can have fresh, better-tasting produce that will cost you less in the long-run. And, you’ll know that it’s been grown without the use of harmful sprays and chemicals.

I won’t pretend to be a gardening expert…far from it! But it is something to consider to reduce grocery costs.  And, if you know others who have gardens, consider doing some bartering with them and trade produce to get more variety. If you do an internet search, you’ll come up with plenty of websites with tips to get started. However, here are a few places to start:

Fuel Economy – weekly deals 3/10-3/16/2011

Most of us have been noticing with concern the rising fuel prices lately. Sadly, not only will the rising fuel costs affect our own cost of driving, but it always increases the costs of everything else that has to be transported from one location to another. So, it can really put a crimp in our budgets. I thought this was a good time to re-post some fuel economy tips to help a bit.

I know many of us would love to be able to replace our vehicles with hybrids or possibly even electric cars that are less expensive to operate.  But let’s face it – taking on a new car payment is daunting to most of us. But there are several affordable things we can do to get the optimal gas mileage from our vehicles.

  1. Make sure the tires are properly inflated. According to Midas.com, gas mileage can increase by 3.3% with properly inflated tires. In addition, properly inflated tires are safer and will last longer, thus saving you more money.  Other sources indicate that you should follow the vehicle’s owner’s handbook for the proper inflation. Sometimes the sticker on the door will also tell you what that should be.
  2. Keep your vehicle properly aligned.  When a vehicle pulls to one side, not only does it cause early wear on the tires, but it also creates more drag on the engine, thus using more fuel.
  3. Clear out the trunk of unnecessary weight. Additional weight in the vehicle will cause more fuel consumption.
  4. Remove roof racks that are not used regularly. Even an empty bicycle/cargo/ski rack will take away from the aerodynamics of the vehicle and increase fuel consumption.
  5. Keep your car clean and waxed. A smooth surface offers less wind resistance and will aid in fuel economy.
  6. Don’t drive aggressively!  Rapid speeding up and braking can cost you up to 33% increase in fuel consumption on the highway and up to 5% increase in town!
  7. Routine vehicle maintenance:   Change your oil according to your vehicle manufacturer’s service schedule and use the correct grade of oil. This can improve gas mileage by up to 2%.  Additional routine maintenance helps as well, making sure all filters are replaced regularly.
  8. This one is challenging is Florida, but try to avoid purchasing gas during the heat of the day! Gas is more dense (more concentrated) when it is cooler, so you’ll get more for your money.
  9. Don’t top off the tank!  Excess gas evaporates so when the pump clicks off, remove the nozzle. However, before removing the nozzle, twist it slightly so it is upside down and tap it a few times. This will allow whatever gas is still in there to go into your tank instead of the person behind you. Plus it keeps it from running down the side of your car.
  10. Make sure the gas cap is tightened. A loose gas cap will cause gas to evaporate. And, in many vehicles, it will cause your “check engine” light to come on, which might cost unnecessary repairs. If you lose your gas cap, it’s suggested that you purchase a new one from the manufacturer to ensure a proper fit.
  11. Last but not least, consider a gas rebate card. Many companies offer cash rebates on gas purchases. However, be sure the price at the pump will still make it a better deal. If that oil company has far higher prices than another station nearby, it may not be your best option.

I would love to hear any helpful hints that you have on saving on gas or any other tips. Just leave a comment!

$10 off $50 Gas Card! – Apparently in the Publix Ad that was included in the Palm Beach Post and Sun-Sentinel on March 9, 2011 is a coupon for $10 off the purchase of a $50 Gas gift card. I often see these in the sales flyers in the stores as well.  I believe you have to purchase $25 at Publix, excluding the gas card. Be sure to read the fine print for details and exclusions. But, if this is good for a gas station you normally use, that’s a 20% savings on gas!

Walmart Deals – Head on over to Money Saving Mom for the great deals to be found at Walmart right now.

80% off at Restaurant.com – Crazy Coupon Mommy has the scoop on this fantastic offer – just $2 for a $25 gift card! *Be sure to read the fine print.*

Healthful Savings – weekly deals 3/3-3/9/2011

It seems that all the health experts agree that Americans, overall, eat far too much meat, and not enough fruits and veggies.  In planning meals for the week, and trying to reduce the grocery budget even more, I started thinking about some changes to our menu.  I am looking into some recipes that will reduce the amount of meat my family eats. I’m not planning on making drastic changes that will have my family rebelling… just some small changes. For example, I have a chicken casserole recipe that we like. I normally use 4 chicken breasts in the casserole. However, it would be very easy for me to reduce that to 3 without changing the taste of the meal. I could toss in an extra helping of the veggies that are already in there, or add an additional type of veggie to it.

Another effort I’m making is looking into having one meatless dinner per week.  Vegetable stir-fry with rice is a good option that comes to mind. We’ve also made spaghetti squash casserole before. Personally, I’m not crazy about some of the typical vegetarian foods such as tofu and hummus, but I do believe there are many ways to reduce my grocery budget without offending my family’s tastebuds!

In addition, I’m trying really hard to keep fruits and veggies around as snacks. My entire family will eat it if it’s available. So, carrot sticks, grapes, melon, pineapple, sugar snap peas are all great snack or dessert items, just to name a few. If you really want to make it seem like dessert, add some whipped cream or fat-free pudding or yogurt to the fruit.

So, this week, I challenge you to reduce your meat intake and start experimenting with some recipes. Vegetables are considerably cheaper than meat and you will be getting the added health benefits as well.

I would love to hear what some of your favorite vegetarian or low-meat recipes are!

Don’t Waste Those Leftovers! weekly deals 2/23-3/2/2011

Have you ever given any thought to how much food you waste by forgetting it is in the refrigerator? Just yesterday I had to clean out my fridge.  For some reason, it was packed full but there wasn’t really anything to eat! I’m sure you have all felt that way at times. As I started pulling out containers of leftovers that had to be thrown away, I was disgusted.  I probably threw enough food away to make at least two full dinners for my family of four. In reality, it was probably more than that.  We had a few containers of fruit that had gone bad, and several containers of leftover meat, among other things. Considering that finances are always tight, I was sad that we had not been better stewards of our money.   I have never been very good at keeping my refrigerator organized, and usually my husband takes leftovers for his lunch at work, so I was surprised to find this much food I had to toss.

So, I’m working on a plan to stop this. I have a roll of the “blue” tape that is used for construction work. It sticks well, but does not leave a sticky residue when it’s removed.  I plan to mark what’s in the container and the date on the blue tape and place it on the container before putting it in the fridge.  Then, I will keep a list on the front of the fridge with the same information.  So, when someone pulls out the leftovers to use them, they can cross it off the list.  Or, when I’m trying to figure out what to make for dinner, I can look at my list and see what needs used up before making more.

I’m also going to try to keep my refrigerator a little more organized so I can easily find the containers!  I’d love to hear any suggestions you have for what works for you. This is a work in progress! J

Good Sales

Did anyone get a chance to take advantage of Publix great sales last week? I had a great shopping spree there.  I saved over 50% on my order!  For those who live in areas where stores offer double coupons, I know that may not seem so great. But, without double coupons, my goal is to save 50% and it’s not always easy to do!  If you’d like to see how I did it, you can read about it here.
